Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
Clean Water. Confident Girls. Healthier Communities.

Our Services
Clean Water. Confident Girls. Healthier Communities.
In Uganda, young people especially girls and women are the primary water collectors. Many walk long distances or navigate overcrowded slums just to fetch water, often from unsafe sources like swamps or shared community taps. Poor storage and limited knowledge make even this water risky to consume. For girls living in informal settlements and rural schools, the lack of private, clean toilets and safe menstrual hygiene options leads to embarrassment, missed school days, and even dropping out. Many manage periods with rags or without water, often hiding in shame. This isn't just a hygiene issue — it's a health crisis. Waterborne diseases, urinary tract infections, and reproductive health complications are all linked to poor sanitation. Yet, when women and girls are equipped with clean water, knowledge, and safe spaces, they stay in school, stay healthy, and lead confidently. At Autonomy, we treat WASH as more than infrastructure — it’s a pathway to equity, autonomy, and opportunity.
What We Do
Our community-driven approach focuses on everyday solutions that work for women, youth, and under-served communities:
- Promote handwashing and hygiene behavior change
- Facilitate access to clean, nearby water sources through partnerships
- Mobilize communities and schools to create gender-sensitive, private toilets
- Provide menstrual hygiene training and distribute dignity kits to adolescent girls
- Integrate WASH across our Nutrition, SRHR, and Livelihoods programs
Our Impact So Far
✅ 10+ clean water points installed or improved in high-need areas
✅ 800+ community members reached with hygiene and sanitation education
✅ 300+ adolescent girls supported with MHM training and dignity kits
Voices from the Field
At school, I used to stay quiet when I got my period because I had no pads and no clean place to change. I would go home and miss classes. After getting a dignity kit and training, I know how to take care of myself. I feel clean and safe — and I stay in school.
You can help protect health, dignity, and education by supporting safe water and hygiene access in schools, homes, and urban slums.
